Bmw returns to its roots of racing in dtm retro and classic cars

BMW has confirmed that it will be competing in the 2012 German DTM Championship for the first time in its 18 year history.

This announcement comes after much speculation and sees the manufacturer returning to series since 1994.

There were some signs from BMW that they were interested in  competing  back in April, but this was only confirming talks of the regulations about the series.  BMW will be using the current M3 as a basis for its new challenger.

Klaus Draeger, BMW’s R&D chief, said: “The return of BMW to the DTM is a fundamental part of the restructuring of our motorsport activities. With its increased commitment to production car racing, BMW is returning to its roots.”

BMW has won the DTM twice in the past with Eric van de Poele and Roberto Ravaglia at the wheel in 1987 and 1989.
