Time to celebrate classic cars and a classic confection

As we head into the final week of June, three big Two Rivers events are upon us: Sundae Thursday this Thursday evening, and the Cool City Classic Car Cruise and Show on Friday and Saturday. Celebrate the Sundae. Come downtown to Central Park on Thursday to celebrate the 131st anniversary of Ed Berners’ invention of the ice cream sundae, here in Two Rivers in 1881. Volunteers will be serving up 25-cent sundaes from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Ryan Kamien’s Comedy Magic Show Campaign Tour will perform at 5:30 p.m., and the Two Rivers Municipal Band will take the stage at 7 p.m. The event also features various giant inflatables for the kids. Thanks to U.S. Bank for co-sponsoring this event with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. And thanks to Kemp’s for donating the delicious ice cream for the celebration.

A film crew will be visiting from upstate New York to get footage for an upcoming PBS program on the origins of the Sundae. Folks in Ithaca, N.Y., still claim that their town was the birthplace of this iconic confection, based on an 1892 newspaper ad (11 years post-Ed Berners) and other specious evidence. Come for the car cruise.

It just gets better and better every year - the Friday night Cool City Classic Car Cruise from Manitowoc to Two Rivers along Memorial Drive. Last year’s cruise featured more than 400 vehicles, and there are likely to be even more this year, as the event’s popularity keeps growing. Memorial Drive provides great viewing spots for the cruise, which departs from the University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc campus at 6 p.m. headed for downtown TR.

Once downtown, many of the car owners will park in the area around Central Park, where the Strawberry Jam Band will perform and there will be brats, burgers, beer and soda available for purchase. Events on Friday night wrap up around 9:30 p.m. Thanks to Formrite Companies and Ball Auto & Truck Parts Inc. (TR’s NAPA store) for sponsoring Friday night’s entertainment.

Washington Street will be closed for this special event. Come back for the car show. On Saturday, TR’s main drag becomes a sea of classic steel and chrome, as 300-plus vehicles are expected for the 12th annual Cool City Classic Car Show. Cars will be displayed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Grilled burgers and brats, along with cheese curds from Riverside Foods, will be sold all day in the Central Park concession stand. Thanks to Two Rivers Main Street for organizing this special event, very capably co-chaired for the past several years by Rick and Colleen Inman of Inman Jewelers. Thanks also to the three premiere sponsors - Riverside Foods, Riverwood-Maritime Credit Union and Shoreline Credit Union - and to numerous major and associate sponsors who make this event possible.

Welcome to Christopher Zahn, new chief at the United states Coast Guard Station in TR. Chief Boatswains Mate Christopher Zahn on Monday of this week assumed command of the Coast Guard Station in Two Rivers. Zahn and his family have relocated to the area from New Jersey. We wish him every success in his new responsibilities leading the station and aids to navigation team here at Two Rivers. Congratulations, HFM Maritime Marathon organizers
Last weekend’s first-ever HFM Maritime Marathon was a great success.

Not only was the event well-received by the 400-plus runners who participated, but it showcased the amazing sweep of Lake Michigan coastline shared by Manitowoc and Two Rivers. Many of the runners commented positively on the beautiful and unique course for the marathon, as well as our cooler by the lake weather. Lots of runners and attendees - even those from nearby locales like Green Bay and the Fox Valley - also were surprised by our great beaches and trails along the lake. We’ll be back was a popular refrain.

Thank you to Holy Family Memorial for sponsoring this new area event. And thanks to race director Dave Nickels and his very capable organizing committee for a masterful job of coordinating all the moving parts of this major event. …Plus the many volunteers who provided aid, comfort and security for runners along the 13-mile course. Our communities look forward to hosting the second HFM Maritime Marathon, in 2013, and for many years to come.
